Theory: The Personality Cores Aren't Actually AI

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 10:42 AM PDT

Portal 2 establishes that GLaDOS isn't a true AI since she was based on Caroline's mind. Everything that was revealed in the game implies that whatever brain mapping technique Aperture used to create GLaDOS was destructive and that Caroline didn't survive the procedure. The Portal wiki also states that she was the first known personality core and other cores were built soon after to try to make her behave (e.g. to not flood the facility with deadly neurotoxin).

Did Aperture already have dumb AIs in development alongside/before GLaDOS or did they just repeat what already worked to make the other personality cores so quickly?

That presents a dark implication about the other personality cores and possibly the turrets as well. Were they based on other humans put through the same procedure? Considering that Cave directed Aperture to develop mind uploading as a way for him to cheat death, it would seem that having a human mind inside was always the intention, at least for the initial version.

GLaDOS is obviously the most intelligent "AI", and it's shown that she's just as smart when detached from the central mainframe in the form of her "eye" running from a [potato] battery. Everything that was mentioned about Caroline implied she was quite intelligent and not simply Cave's secretary.

So, smart person in, smart AI out.

The rest of the Cores are much more simple-minded but still "smarter" than any current real-world AI. We also know that toward the 70's and later, Aperture had to resort to paying homeless people to test the Aperture Science Portable Quantum Tunneling Device and subjected them to various medical experiments (sometimes knowingly/willingly, sometimes not).

My theory is that none of the "AI" in Aperture is actually artificial and that the Cores were all made from former test subjects/employees who were killed in the process. Whether they were willing or informed participants is up for debate. At best, it could have been like one of those bonus opportunities mentioned in the 70's like complete disassembly and reassembly while scooping out tumors and spit-shining organs.

Considering that GLaDOS had no memory of her former identity until hearing the recordings of Cave and Caroline in the old test shafts, it would stand to reason the other Cores are only aware of their current state with no memory of being human. Perhaps some of their more dominant personality quirks made it through the procedure, but otherwise the only existence they know is that of a Core (e.g. the Space Core was someone who was really interested in space when alive, the anger core was someone with a bad temper, Wheatley was just an affable dumb guy, etc).

It's a little more difficult to reconcile the turrets since it wouldn't have been practical for Valve to give each one its own distinct personality/voice actor and we encounter many of them throughout the games. Perhaps the first batch of them were based on a human mind with the rest simply copied from that one during mass production.

how did the portal gun work when it was first made

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:18 PM PDT

All right, I've been thinking. When life gives you a portal gun, don't make portals, cause you don't moon rocks. okay jokes aside, in portal 2 we learn more about the aperture science handheld portal device, but we also learn that they made the portal gun before they had moon rocks, so how did they use the portal gun? we can only shoot at walls with moon paint, so how did they do it, if anyone knows please tell

Left mouse button not working on multiplayer coop only?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 02:51 PM PDT

For some the left mouse button doesn't shoot a portal when I'm playing co op on Portal? It works on the menu in the co op setting and in the rest of the game, it's specifically in co op, regardless of character. Has anyone had this issue? How on earth do I fix it?
