My thoughts on Portal: Reloaded Posted: 20 Apr 2021 05:28 PM PDT There will be spoilers in this post. You have been warned. I was pretty excited when it got announced and I downloaded it yesterday. I just finished it. The game's level design is great. It makes good use of all of its mechanics and the levels are challenging. They're not too challenging, but they definitely take a little while to figure out normally. I really like it. The new time portal is really cool and I really like how it ties into existing mechanics. It makes for fun, inventive, and super original levels that are just a lot of fun to play. But I'm going to stop you before you call it Portal 3. It's not. The story isn't great. There's very little to it. You're another test subject and you have to do tests with a new time travel gun that only works with time traveling to 20 years in the future. It's revealed at some point that your real purpose is to stop Chell in the future. That's pretty much the entire story until the end. And the end is pretty underwhelming too. There's no boss battle or big challenge to overcome. You're going to be taken into stasis so that you can stop Chell in the future, but you escape with 2 portals. The entire escape sequence has 1 obstacle. 1 crusher that you evade by using 1 time portal. That's it. Then you get in an elevator with an "elevator to the surface" sequence that's been done multiple times before. And there really isn't anything special about it, you just go to the surface. You get out and there's 3 headcrab zombies lined up walking towards you. The game was fun and the new mechanic and level design were great, but the story and ending were lacking. It's a great mod and I totally recommend getting it (it's free), but it's no Portal 3. Portal Stories: Mel is a lot closer to being Portal 3 than this is. [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Apr 2021 08:22 PM PDT Half Life: Alyx was a pleasant surprise to many regarding this connected universe. I found the game incredibly enjoyable, and a great addition. However, this begins speculation towards the Portal franchise. If we have a spin-off / main series game for Half Life, then there is a high probability that Valve's second most popular franchise is going to get this treatment as well. This is high speculation. Yet, this doesn't seem out of the realm of possibilities for Valve now. Especially when you consider that these games share one major aspect of this connected universe the Borealis. This is where the post begins to become speculative, but please share your thoughts on whether this is the possible route Valve is going; because, we know they can't count to 3. Portal and Half Life share this boat, and it is arguable that some sort of powerful localized teleportation device was on board. Why is this the only aspect the games share? It's an odd decision to make something from a separate game franchise so pivotal in another, unless other aspects from the game franchise are involved. Which is what I believe in full heartedly, but what pray-tell would you include for such a game that adds layers to both franchise's and has a satisfying experience from a gameplay and story perspective? The answer... make the game about Caroline & Cave. From a gameplay perspective: Create it as a scenario game, or a game made up of separate minigames. Each level or levels are dedicated to a particular gimmicks throughout Apeture Science's history. Use a variety of different weapons, different gameplays, games that everyone will find enjoyable. Some examples are as follows. EXAMPLES. Mantis-Men Attack: A call back to Cave's line regarding a bad experiment. You grab a gun and begin shooting. Recommend making this similar to COD's Zombies mode. Gel Racer: A parkour style map where you race players or AI. A Reference to Portal Puzzle Portal: Obviously a Portal Reference. Same gameplay as portal. Gravity: Use the gravity lifts from Portal in combination to the Gloves from Half Life: Alyx. Try and grab different things while doing this. Obviously some better modes could be created, but those were ones that I could think of. STORY PERSEPCTIVE: Have the Story follow Cave and Caroline, as they do these tests themselves. "Don't worry we only test the fun-non deadly (exception of the Mantis-Men) ones so Caroline & myself will be around for years to come, all in the name of science." ~ Cave Johnson. Establish the Character of these two and their repour with one another (which was likely romantic). Have Cave as a dedicated partner to Caroline, but also incredibly focused upon science. Doing everything in his power for human progress. While Caroline is the opposite, but never corrects Cave upon his actions. These will both be aspects that will bite them in the but in the future. But make Cave have the moral low-ground and Caroline the moral high ground. Have them compliment one another, and have in-between points for each of the Mini-Games where plot is progressed. To show the progress of time use dark hallways, which when exited bring up the new year that they are now operating in. All this plot would be dedicated mostly to Cave and Caroline's Relationship, The Formation of Artificial Intelligence, The bankruptcy, The Borealis, and some hints to a character unknown to both of them, but well known to Half Life fans. G-Man This may seem life fan-service, but this has been racking my brain for a little while. What if the G-Man created Glados? We see him as an individual of means and nudging rather than doing things himself. He never personally gets his hands dirty unless it aligns with the actions someone else within the Dimension had already executed. Think of G-man as an enabler rather than a doer. This is where Cave and Caroline's Relationship comes into play, because it's likely for whatever reason. G-Man has to play by rules not of his own, but another's. GAME ENDING Have the scientists getting ready to put Caroline into an Artificial Intelligence, as was Cave's Final wishes, but have Caroline screaming and crying for them not to do it, I would make the scientists empathetic, because she was always kind to them, so have them show kindness here. This is where G-Man comes in. He knows no one is going to do the procedure, but the "The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference." Have him pull an Half Life: Alyx where he brings Cave to this moment. Cave and Caroline, have their final moment together, but even though Cave loves her. He inevitably chooses science over her, and he press's the button to begin the consciousness transfer. G-man takes Cave back to his timeline where soon after he dies of his moon rock poisoning. Why have this ending in particular? Because I believe Aperture is far more important because of creation of Glados. If Caroline never became Glados Aperture would likely have gained a grasp on its financial holding, become a powerful company, and importantly humanities best bet against the Combine. If humans had access to localized teleportation rather than the combine the 7 Hour War would have gone incredibly different. G-Man creates a timeline where the Portal Technology is available, but no one other than individuals at Aperture are aware of it, and Glados is the one that makes this information seal tight by killing everyone in the facility. No witnesses no information, no advantage, and a prize for the taking for the Combine. This I believe to would establish a grudge for Glados against G-Man more than anyone else, because rather than blame the love of her life for killing her, she will go for the G-man. Share your thoughts on this possible plot direction. I'm going to cross post this to r/HalfLife also. [link] [comments]
