Posted: 19 Oct 2021 06:28 PM PDT First of all I am admittedly fairly uninformed on the background of the Portal/Half life universe so please feel free to shoot this theory down and tell me how wrong I am, but I recently started playing Portal 2 after nearly half a decade and I noticed something rather strange about the story. My theory is that there is something about Aperture science that twists people, distorting their minds and turning them into something they are not. There are, at least in my opinion, three entities that had control over Aperture science: Cave Johnson, GlaDOS and Wheatley. Cave Johnson, who by all accounts was an incredibly successful and intelligent man who built from nothing one of the most technologically advanced companies in the world, slowly declined in sanity and business acumen once his sole focus turned to Aperture science. His recordings towards the end of his life show that he went completely insane, forcing employees to test against their will (in deleted audio showing that he effectively forced Caroline to become GLaDOS against her will), making awful financial decisions, being incredibly paranoid and generally becoming completely unhinged. The portraits of him show that he physically declined, looking nothing like he once did. I know that he was struggling with the effects of Moon rock poisoning, but it is his ridiculous purchase of that moon rock ($70m worth when he could hardly afford to lose $7) that gave him that illness in the first place. I am not saying he intentionally poisoned himself, but a man who up until this point had been a financial genius and a savvy businessman effectively indebted himself to the tune of tens of millions of dollars on a far flug, insane project that will save the company that he has slowly been destroying through reckless spending, testing and business decisions. Cave showed virtually no signs of this bizarre, unhinged and erratic behaviour at any other point in his life, and you can effectively track his decline as his tenure as head of Aperture goes on. We know the story of GLaDOS killing everyone and becoming evil once she became in charge of the facility, so I wont mention it in too much detail, but again shows that as soon as she is placed in charge of the facility she becomes a complete psychopath, killing everyone and her treatment of Chell in the games again shows this. (As an aside, the first thing she does when being activated again in Portal 2 is to immediately destroy Wheatley, or so she thinks, pick Chell up and force her to begin 60 years worth of testing). Now it is Wheatley. Mere seconds after being put in charge of the facility, Wheatley, who up until this point has been an extremely likeable, friendly and jovial, designed to be nothing more than an intelligence dampening unit, turns evil, smashing Chell into the ground and doing everything he can to kill her. When he is removed from Aperture and floating around in space, he expresses his genuine remorse, sadness and regret. He genuinely doesn't seem to know what came over him and admits that he became a monster when he was in charge of the facility. When put back in charge, GLaDOS deletes Caroline, who in my opinion had been GLaDOS this whole time, again showing how destructive and twisted those who are put in charge of the facility become. So this has led me to the conclusion that there is something about running Aperture that distorts people, turns them into something they are not and that the facility is thus cursed to destroy everyone who leads it. I'm planning to livestream community mods, which one should I try first? Posted: 19 Oct 2021 05:46 PM PDT Hey Portal fans! I love both Portal and livestreaming so I'm doing a fully fledged Portal 2 livestream every twice a week -- I finished playing Portal 2 last week and I want to move over to community mods now! I want to ask your opinion which one should I go first for this week? :ooo I'm also playing community maps on second day so if you have any good maps to recommend, please send me one over! I'll consider playing it :)) Oh and btw, if you're interested in watching me playing these, here's my Twitch! https://www.twitch.tv/jessieyun [tsk tsk, what a shameless promotion] [link] [comments]
Portal 2 in different languages. Posted: 20 Oct 2021 03:53 AM PDT Greetings! What do you think about German, French, Russian and Spanish dubbing? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Oct 2021 06:41 PM PDT I was just talking with a buddy of mine about Portal, and he said he always assumed Chell was deaf. She never signed anything in-game because she had nobody to sign anything to. And she never responded to GLaDOS because she never heard anything GLaDOS said. Or any of the other bots like Wheatley, which is why you jump instead of saying Apple. Is there anything to this? [link] [comments]
