    /r/Portal Test Chamber Showcase - June 2021

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:00 AM PDT

Hello, and again, welcome to the Aperture Science computer-aided enrichment center. We hope your brief detention in the relaxation vault has been a pleasant one.

The Enrichment Center is pleased to present the {{date %B %Y}} /r/Portal Test Chamber Showcase.

Here, you may post links to up to three chambers, or one collection. You may post your own chamber or someone else's chamber, but if it was made by someone else, please be advised that Aperture Science regulations require you to credit the author. If you fail to do so, you must disregard any undeserved praise.

Feedback and discussion about chambers you have tested in this thread is highly encouraged, as it helps creators to improve their work.

    Thank you, and have fun.

In the finale of portal reloaded, any else noticed you can do the level without opening the 3 laser doors just using the light bridge thru time to get to the door.

When a common moron takes full control of a facility: (For example, Aperture Science)

Changes I would make for a Portal Prelude canonized remake

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:23 AM PDT

I've been replaying Portal Prelude again recently and I couldn't help but wonder what the mod would be like it if were remade in Portal 2 with the new canon in mind. Here's a list of the things I would change from the story to the gameplay to better fit the Aperture Science of Portal 2 and to fix some of the mod's wonkier test chambers:

    Story alterations

    1. The employees can remain the same, but scientists such as Doug Ratman will also be included in the script to give a little more backdrop in what they're doing with GLaDOS. Ratman would also help the player find the Morality Core after GLaDOS goes rouge since he can't escape himself.
    2. Some story details in the script itself will have to be adjusted, such as it taking place in the year 1998 rather than 2001 in the original mod. Peter would also have a line mentioning that former CEO Cave Johnson died of moon rock poisoning and his successor (Caroline) "disappeared" not very long ago, making him think the company is cursed. There'd be other dialogue like this sprinkled throughout the testing as well.
    3. About halfway though the testing, GLaDOS would temporarily supervise the testing to have her test proctoring abilities observed by the scientists. In addition, she also sends the player down behind the scenes to flip a breaker with an unknown purpose, which will give her a larger supply of neurotoxin after realizing its lethality and thus take over the whole facility. She often sends the player down the wrong path or into bad situations while doing this however due to the effects of the Intelligence Dampening Sphere on her chassis. The player will then return to testing to the relief of the employees, who assume that some kind of glitch in GLaDOS is to blame for what happened.
    4. After completing all of the tests and joining the employees for a party, you'll walk past the daycare center and neurotoxin production area from Portal 2. You can actually see the Adventure Sphere here in the daycare room telling the kids about a crazy and comically ridiculous "science adventure" story, with a younger Chell even appearing in the audience as a brief cameo. The potato battery exhibits can also be seen in this part as well.
    5. Instead of GLaDOS turning on the scientists the moment she's activated, in this version she does it the moment they remove the Intelligence Dampening Sphere from her chassis. She sends in turrets to kill everyone in her chamber and gasses the main offices with neurotoxin, forcing the player to flee in a certain amount of time. She does this as an act of revenge for what they've done to both GLaDOS and Caroline respectively, with GLaDOS being muzzled with additional cores and Caroline being forced into an experiment she never wanted to be in.
    6. After escaping the gassed portion of the facility, the player goes down into some of the older sections of Aperture and discovers how GLaDOS came to be. Some of the unused dialogue for Caroline refusing Cave Johnson's request to be put in an AI would even be used here to drive home the point.
    7. The Morality Core would have some voice clips upon picking it up and taking it to GLaDOS' chamber. It constantly morally evaluates it words and your actions, and ironically it can be quite rude at times before quickly apologizing for its behavior.
    8. The final encounter would be changed quite a bit. The main goal is still to place the Morality Core on GLaDOS' chassis, but this time the turrets and rocket turret are used as the main obstacles rather than those strange abilities she had in the original mod. Neurotoxin would also time each phase, and you have to hit her with rockets five times to fully disable and attach the Morality Core to her. The difficulty intensifies each phase, with more and more obstacles added that have to be overcome in the same amount of time.
    9. The ending isn't all that different, GLaDOS does a full reboot after the Morality Core is stuck on her and you use this brief window of time to leave on an elevator to the surface. To give a bit of contrast to other endings in this fashion, you enter the parking lot of the facility at night rather than during the day.

    Style/Gameplay changes

    1. The style and assets of the mod would be changed to match the style of Portal 2. However, most of the test chambers themselves would be mechanically and functionally very similar to their original counterparts. With that said, the chambers would be resized a bit to feel less claustrophobic in certain areas and more behind the scenes areas can be seen in various holes in the chambers themselves.
    2. Certain wonkier mechanics in some of the tests (particularly the flinging in test chamber 19 comes to mind) would be reworked significantly to be made less irritating, this is somewhat problematic in certain areas.
    3. The behind the scenes portions would be altered to better match what's shown in Portal 2. The portions of the campaign they're in however would remain the same alongside some new additions.
    4. The small amount of time spent in the bottom of the facility/old Aperture would remain consistent with how Portal 2 portrayed it, although different portions of it would be shown than those in the single player campaign.
    5. GLaDOS herself retains her Portal 1 appearance for story reasons, although her cores would be updated to match the ones seen in Portal 2 (like Wheatley and the corrupt cores). Their colored handles however would still remain.
    6. Turrets would now reflect their Portal 2 appearance and rocket turrets would have their core and core eye changed to be a larger, green version of the regular turret eye.

    Misc. differences/Other notes

    1. The main protagonist of this mod would still be a blonde female named Abby, although preferably her model would be changed to not be another clone of Chell.
    2. Some lore on Wheatley's name would be given as well, as the main director behind his creation is Dr. Wheatley and nicknamed the Intelligence Dampening Sphere after himself.
    3. The Still Alive covers would still be present in the remake, and if I had the resources necessary I would also create a Want you Gone cover in the same style as well.

That's about it, I think. Is there anything I didn't think of in this list that should be changed or anything that should stay the same? If you've got any feedback at all I've love to hear it!

I've only gotten into portal recently. I play it through backwards compatibility on my Xbox one. I'm not sure if we'll even be able to connect, but if so I'd like to play it as I'm the only one of my friends who owns the game.

Gnome Hunt - Competitive Portal 2 Map

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:07 AM PDT

    The Map

A new fully-custom hammer made gamemode where 2 players compete to collect the most gnomes in a set amount of time. There are several different unique options, like Bomb Gnomes that explode when you pick them up, etc.

Map made by me, Klunky_one. I also voiced the custom core in the map. This is set in my newest singleplayer map, "Collapse".

Pergagreen suggested I post this here, he also helped playtest. His profile can be found in the description of the map.

    Have fun!
