    Attempted Wheatley Model

I did not know this subreddit existed. Now I do. So I want to share a thing I made.

    https://imgur.com/a/dyNEOcc

He's technically unfinished despite being about 3 years old now. About the size of a basketball, predominantly carved out of a 12'' foam craft ball and Spackle. Because I never made a model before so I just went with a cheap, unskilled medium. It's turned out shockingly sturdy so far, he's still in one piece!

He's technically pose-able, in that he has different sets of eye shutters that Velcro into different positions. His handles can move also but he's ended up quite chunky so they don't quite come over his face like they should.

So I guess I'll call him obese Wheatley.

A fan theory to why the tone of Portal 1 and 2 or so drastically to each other.

A fan theory to why the tone of Portal 1 and 2 are so drastically different from each other. (Sorry kinda screwed up the title but Reddit won't let me edit it)

Before I start, I'd like to note that I have a good idea as to the real reason why the tones are different but I wanna put in my own idea into it too just for funsies.

So in Portal 1 we play as our beloved protagonist, Chell. She wakes up in the minimalistic, bleak, eerie environment know as the Aperture Science (Computer-Aided) Enrichment Center and is greeted by the robotic voice of GLaDOS, a emotionless voice that commands her throughout the facility as she goes through these tests. Throughout the game though she starts to pick up on the idea that she's completely alone. There are no real human associates observing her in the observatory room within each test chamber and she starts to get the sense of impending loneliness. Because of this, since we're playing the game through Chell's eyes, we get a sense of how she's preceiving the world around her. And so songs like "Self Esteem Fund" and "No Cake For You" give you the idea of how she's feeling in her currently situation. I'd also like to note that the song "No Cake For You" is automatically played when she enters Rattmann's den for the first time and reads all the scribbling on the walls left by him for her to see, seeing as "the cake is a lie" and "she's watching you" and the tally marks of days upon days on how long he's been there. She really starts to see the reality of her situation and how her robot guide is more than just an announcer for the test. And leading up to "4000 Degrees Kelvin" when GLaDOS tries to kill her it's tensful and "Stop What You Are Doing" plays when she finally sees the behind the scenes escape levels. She finally knows that she's all alone. With no one left but herself and it completely crushes her needs for human interaction. Which is why Portal 1 has always given off this creepy, isolated, sometimes psychological horror vibe to it. Because without the need of other lively companions (animate companions, mind you. Sorry, Companion Cube.) Anyone would go crazy cooped up in place such as Aperture Science. (Post-GLaDOS diseaster, events of Portal 1)

But this completely changes in Portal 2

In Portal 2, Chell is wakes from her suspension for.. well.. we don't know for how long exactly so it's hard to pinpoint, but she wakes up in the very far distant future, that we know for sure. But she's awoken by the comedically, relieving, lovable character know as Wheatley. This is Chell's first interaction with something animate (that is friendly and not trying to kill her cough GLaDOS cough) and is very uppity and funny, has a lot of expressions and overall feels more human to her than anything she's experienced in Portal 1, given the fact she has had no social interaction at all. Giving Chell some sense of hope to her situation now that she has a newly found friend to help guide her out of the run down facility. Another thing I'd like to note is that Wheatley mentioned that it might not be out of the question that Chell might have a minor case of serious brain damage. (It would make sense since Chell was knocked out for so long and the technology keeping her unconscious could've affected her brain significant, but not physically) this is important because of her minor case of "serious brain damage" could be the reason as to why Aperture has more charm to it, when using the lasers and faith plates you can hear light music to each item used in Aperture, the reason for this is she sees this all as a fun game (literally lol) because of her brain damage, same when she uses the gels for the first time and bouncing, running on them create this exciting tune(s) to their use, kind of like a little kid discovering something fun for the first time. And because of this significant brain damage, it has entirely change her perspective on Aperture Science and her situation in the events of Portal 2 as whole. Except for the exception of Exile Vilify where she took the time to listen and see the seriousness of GLaDOS' past on kiling everyone in the facility and overall her still being trapped in Aperture.

And of course this isn't the real reason why the tones are so different. I understand that Valve didn't have a clue Portal would be so big so when making Portal 2, they wanted a more engaging, charming experience for new and old players a like, making Portal 2 more likable than Portal 1 by a long shot (still love them both equally though) but I thought it be fun to make a harmless little theory through Chell's perspective as to why the tones are the way they are throughout the games canonically.

tl;dr: Portal 1 made Chell pessimistic and lonely, giving off a isolated vibe in Portal 1 whilst Portal 2, she had an actual friend (Wheatley) and was probably bonkers due to her brain damage, making everything she interacts with all fun and exciting sounding.

I hope you guys enjoyed this theory, hope you're all having a good day!
